What is Hot Dip Galvanizing — And Why Does It Matter for OEMs?

Hot dip galvanizing (HDG) is the process of coating fabricated steel by immersing it in a bath of molten zinc. The result is a tough, metallurgically-bonded coating that protects steel from corrosion for decades — often with no maintenance at all. For OEMs and fabricators, choosing the right galvanizing partner is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for the longevity and reputation of your product.

How the hot dip galvanizing process works

• Surface preparation — caustic cleaning, acid pickling and fluxing remove oil, scale and rust so the zinc can bond cleanly.
• Galvanizing — the steel is immersed in molten zinc at around 450°C, forming a series of zinc-iron alloy layers topped by pure zinc.
• Inspection — coating thickness, finish and adhesion are checked against Australian Standard AS/NZS 4680.

Why HDG is the preferred corrosion protection for OEMs

Unlike paint, the zinc coating is bonded to the steel and provides both barrier and sacrificial (cathodic) protection — even if the surface is scratched, the surrounding zinc protects the exposed steel. That means lower lifetime cost, fewer warranty issues and a finish you can stand behind.
