Galvco Opens on the Fraser Coast — What It Means for Queensland Manufacturers
Queensland manufacturers have a new hot dip galvanizing option on the Fraser Coast. Galvco is opening a purpose-built, modern, low-emissions galvanizing plant in Maryborough West — designed from the ground up for OEMs and fabricators who want consistent quality and guaranteed turnaround.
A plant built for quality and speed
Our 1,497m² facility runs Kingfield equipment — technology trusted by leading galvanizers across Europe and Australia. With a 5.0m × 2.0m × 1.0m zinc bath, we’re built to handle real production volumes while keeping the tight quality control that a smaller kettle allows.
Turnaround you can plan around
- Standard — 5 business days, guaranteed
- Express — 48 hours
- Hot Shot — 24 hours
Low emissions by design
Encapsulated pre-treatment and a bag filter mean a cleaner process and a better neighbour. We think galvanizing can be done better — for customers, for our people and for the environment.
People who pick up the phone
At Galvco, a real person picks up the phone — someone who knows your job and is accountable for your outcome. And we’re backed by the Moddex Group, so you get a new galvaniser with the infrastructure and manufacturing know-how of an established industrial group.
Servicing OEMs and fabricators within a four-hour radius of Maryborough — from Rockhampton to the Gold Coast and west to Toowoomba. Get a quote or email info@galvco.com.au.
5 Things to Check Before Sending Your Steel for Galvanizing
A great galvanized finish starts long before your steel reaches the kettle. The way a component is designed and prepared has a direct impact on coating quality, turnaround and cost. Here are five things to check before you send your steel to be galvanized.
1. Venting and draining
Hollow sections and enclosed areas need adequate vent and drain holes so molten zinc can flow in and air can escape. Poor venting causes air pockets, uneven coating and — in the worst case — a safety risk. Design vent holes at diagonally opposite corners and size them to AS/NZS 4680 guidance.
2. Steel selection and silicon content
The silicon and phosphorus content of your steel affects coating thickness and appearance. Steels in the “Sandelin” range can produce thick, dull or patchy coatings. If finish appearance matters, talk to us about steel selection early.
3. Avoid weld spatter and surface contaminants
Weld spatter, paint, grease, lacquer markings and anti-spatter sprays don’t pickle off in normal pre-treatment and will leave bare or rough spots. Clean welds and an unpainted surface give the best result.
4. Overlapping surfaces and seams
Tight overlaps trap cleaning fluids and moisture, which can flash to steam in the zinc bath. Either seal overlaps completely or leave a gap and vent them.
5. Distortion and fixturing
Thin, asymmetric or heavily-welded fabrications can distort from thermal stress. Balanced design, symmetrical welding and the right lifting/draining points reduce the risk.
Not sure about your design? That’s what we’re here for. Get in touch and we’ll help you get a better result the first time.
What is Hot Dip Galvanizing — And Why Does It Matter for OEMs?
Hot dip galvanizing (HDG) is the process of coating fabricated steel by immersing it in a bath of molten zinc. The result is a tough, metallurgically-bonded coating that protects steel from corrosion for decades — often with no maintenance at all. For OEMs and fabricators, choosing the right galvanizing partner is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for the longevity and reputation of your product.
How the hot dip galvanizing process works
- Surface preparation — caustic cleaning, acid pickling and fluxing remove oil, scale and rust so the zinc can bond cleanly.
- Galvanizing — the steel is immersed in molten zinc at around 450°C, forming a series of zinc-iron alloy layers topped by pure zinc.
- Inspection — coating thickness, finish and adhesion are checked against Australian Standard AS/NZS 4680.
Why HDG is the preferred corrosion protection for OEMs
Unlike paint, the zinc coating is bonded to the steel and provides both barrier and sacrificial (cathodic) protection — even if the surface is scratched, the surrounding zinc protects the exposed steel. That means lower lifetime cost, fewer warranty issues and a finish you can stand behind.
What OEMs should look for in a galvanizing partner
- Consistent, repeatable finish quality — ask about their quality control and reject rates.
- Guaranteed turnaround times you can plan production around.
- A real point of contact who understands your deadlines.
- Capacity that matches your component sizes and volumes.
At Galvco, that’s exactly what we built our Fraser Coast plant to deliver. Get a quote or email us at info@galvco.com.au to talk through your requirements.
